While you may not have been able to prevent certain outcomes for patients, you’ve helped their family through a devastating time. I always have said that nurses do for patients and their families what they can’t do for themselves.”

Joan Randolph has retired from nursing, but nursing has never really left her. Shortly before the now-80-year-old Philadelphia native moved into her current home, the Rydal Park retirement community in Jenkintown, Montgomery County, she attended a social gathering to get to know the people there. Immediately, she recognized a nurse she knew from her working days. Then she met another member of her profession. Love at any age: Philly’s older adults prove love is timeless - Philly Voice, 2/10/16

No one can say love is discriminatory. It embraces 5-year-olds who pluck dandelions for their schoolyard crush, wallops 20- and 30-somethings when they least expect it, comforts middle-aged partners when their heads hit the pillow together at night and, notably, reappears later in life even when we think we've had our fill. "A lot of people just think they're too old [to date]," Rita DeMaria, a couples therapist for the Council for Relationships, told PhillyVoice. "But falling in love is timeless." DeMaria, co-author of "The 7 Stages of Marriage," explained that despite obstacles facing people 65 or older -- finances, overprotective children, declining health, etc. -- many of the elderly people she works with do manage to find love. And they often do so with great success, for a multitude of reasons.

War of words: Former congressman authors book - The Midweek Wire 9/10/14

On Oct. 10, 2002, former Pennsylvania Congressman Joe Hoeffel made what he calls “the biggest mistake” of his political career. Guided by reports from the Bush administration suggesting that Saddam Hussein maintained weapons of mass destruction, he voted in the House of Representatives to authorize preemptive war on Iraq. His book, The Iraq Lie: How the White House Sold the War, which was published by Progressive Press in July, offers his view that Americans, including most of Congress, were led into war on Iraq based on deceptive intelligence reports put forth by the Bush White House.

JENKINTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA (AUGUST 27, 2014): Rydal Park Library will present former Pennsylvania Congressman and Abington Township resident Joseph M. Hoeffel discussing his new book The Iraq Lie: How the White House Sold the War at the Auditorium at Rydal Park on Monday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. This event will be free and open to the public on a reserved basis. The Iraq Lie: How the White House Sold the War (Progressive Press, July 2014) is Hoeffel’s first book. In it, he reveals how Congress struggled and failed to resist the war in Iraq and his own regret at believing deceptions perpetrated by the Bush White House to gain support for the war. To prevent this from happening again, Hoeffel proposes reforms that would require full public disclosure of intelligence and a clear mandate from Congress before any major military action.

I’m Not Ready Yet! Or, How to Face Our Fears to Reap the Rewards - FROM THE DESK OF SARAH
When I began working with prospective residents in Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs), I saw N.R.Y. listed under some names. New to the industry, I didn’t understand what that meant. I heard people say they would call if they “needed” us – they were still working, driving, and gardening, and weren’t “ready.” It didn’t make sense – the residents I knew led incredibly active lives. After about three days I realized that the perception of CCRCs was not in line with the reality.

Summer Corn Salad makes a nice lunch, side dish, or topping for fish, chicken, or pork.

The Scoop on Life Care vs. Long Term Care Insurance - FROM THE DESK OF SARAH

They sound similar, but, boy, are they different! In a nutshell, both products are designed to protect your assets from the escalating costs of future care, but Type-A Life Care also assures care management in a designated setting that you choose. Life Care is found at life-care-based continuing care retirement communities, like Rydal Park, where a move to an independent living residence secures an invigorating lifestyle as well as a future plan should care needs change down the road. Long term care policies vary depending on the company writing them, when they were purchased, and what they intended to cover. While the goal is to offset some future care costs, these policies are not associated with where, how or by whom you will receive care when it’s needed.

Ralph Bloch (89) and Anita Shmukler (85) met on the popular Jewish dating web site JDate.com about 8 years ago, and have been living together for the past 6 years in a 55+ community in Warrington. This will be the second marriage for both of them. After searching for a senior living community, they chose Rydal Park because they loved the community and had friends who lived there as well. They will officially move in June but they decided to hold their small wedding here on Sunday, May 31. They are a very fun and funny couple who live life to the fullest! As an example, their honeymoon in July will be a learning experience at the Misericordia University’s Elderhostel outside of Harrisburg. The whole Rydal Park community was excited for a wedding to take place here and to welcome these new residents.

Clubs, Classes, Cuisine and Cultural Events - Winter 2014

Events. Excursions. Our Winter Calendar bustles with activities, and no two are alike.

  • TRAVEL: The Rydal Park Trip Planners organize and take journeys all over the tri-state area. They may go locally to the Abington Art Center or Meadowbrook Farm, a bit further out to Woodmere Art Museum, or further yet to Chester County’s Brandywine River Museum and Winterthur. There are trips to the shore for theater and lunch excursions, and into Philadelphia to the Museum of Art, Franklin Institute, or trolley tours of the Mural Arts Program. The ideas keep flowing and the group has greater successes each season.

The Stories Behind The Stories

The Greater Philadelphia area has a long, proud tradition of media and journalism, but have you ever wondered what makes your favorite media personalities tick? What are the stories behind the stories you read, hear, and see in the media every day? Rydal Park guests and residents recently had the chance to find out just that when five local media stars visited Rydal Park for its 2nd Annual Lively Fall Speaker Series.

Programming to Better Enrich Mind, Body and Spirit – FROM THE DESK OF SARAH

After bricks and mortar, nothing is more vital to a community than its cultural, entertainment and wellness offerings. As interests and passions have evolved, so has the programming to better enrich mind, body and spirit. In other words, bye bye bingo – hello tai chi, yoga, continuing education classes, political forums, orchestra performances and more. Still, people considering a move sometimes feel conflicted between the desire for high-quality programming, and the fear of a “cruise ship” mentality. After 15 years in this industry I can honestly say that the environment is exactly what you make of it.

Music, Arts and Culture

“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” Pablo Picasso got it right when it comes to art’s effect on our lives. But while we’ve all had opportunities to seek out the arts, how often have performances come into your home? With near-constant music, cultural, and fine arts programming on tap, that kind of Spirited Living is a reality for Rydal Park residents.

Stay Social, Stay Smart

You exercise for a stronger body. But what can you do for a stronger brain? Why not socialize? AARP says the key to brain health is staying social. And you’ll find plenty of opportunities to stay social at Rydal Park.

  • JUST SAY “YES” - When asked to go somewhere or do something, just say “yes!” You’ll stimulate your mind and promote cognitive function by meeting new people and experiencing new things.
  • HELP OTHERS - Helping others helps you. All around you there are many volunteer opportunities like planting public gardens or teaching business skills. Your community, and brain, will thank you.

A Family Tradition, 40 Years in the Making
“You talk about an inspired life? Over 16 years my mother’s life was truly inspired by Rydal Park.” So says Helen Helmick-Waite, a second-generation Rydal Park resident who, in addition to her extensive volunteer working the greater Abington Township, has spent these last two years involved with everything from committees like Residents Council to social programs and volunteerism.

We Have A Lot More Living To Do - FROM THE DESK OF SARAH

It wasn’t long ago that people were saying, “40 is the new 30.” Well with today’s growing population of adults 62-plus more vibrant and active than ever before, “80 is the new 60.” You’re working and travelling longer than your predecessors. You’re  far more  involved with arts, culture, and technology. And you’ve brought the focus of health and wellness to the forefront. Continuing care retirement communities have had to revamp and revitalize to suit the interests, passions and needs of a proactive generation that’s on the move.

Appreciating the Arts
Rydal Park prides itself on being a place where the arts are alive and well. From our art and craft studios to our wood shop, we are a community very much in touch with our creative side. One of the ways we showcase the talents of our residents is through our Boardwalk Art Gallery, exhibiting the work of Lynda Boardman, a fabric artist, throughout May and June.

Memory Lane

At Rydal Park there is always an abundance of activities for our residents to enjoy. From the Hi-Way Theater in Jenkintown to our own Book Discussion group, and everything in between, our residents embody Spirited Living. On August 7th, our residents had an opportunity to take a look back at all that they did during the second half of 2013. John Berges’s presentation of “Rydal Park in Pictures: Part IV” highlighted Rydal Park events held both on- and off-campus. It was a great way for residents to laugh, talk and reminisce together, all while looking forward to future events.

The Skylarks

Many of our residents pride themselves on their love, knowledge, and appreciation of music. They love to be entertained almost as much as we love to entertain them, so there is never a shortage of live performances at Rydal Park. On July 10th, we welcomed The SKYLARKS Ensemble for the first time. This quartet of amazing vocalists wowed our residents as they sang classic numbers by greats such as George Gershwin, Stephen Foster, Samuel Barber, and Charlie Chaplin. As if that weren’t enough, these talented performers also gave a fascinating rendition of Emily Dickinson’s poetry. Spirited Living at Rydal Park means discovering excitement and adventure right outside your door.

Fore the Love of the Game
As spring rain yields to summer sun, many residents’ minds turn to the outdoors. For golfers Hal Grier and John Frazier, there is not much better than heading out to enjoy a round of 18 at one of the area’s many beautiful courses.

Chef’s Corner - Summer Corn Salad
Few things say “summer” like fresh corn, and roasting it brings out its natural sweetness. Leave the shucks on and roast at 350° for about 30 minutes, or until corn softens. For a southwestern flair, add black beans and roasted garlic. Optional Scotch bonnet peppers can add a spicy edge. Summer Corn Salad makes a nice lunch, side dish, or topping for fish, chicken, or pork.

Change Your Address Without Changing Your Life

Everywhere you look at Rydal Park, you’ll find residents making the most of life. If you look early enough, you just might find Jay and Donna Karfunkle – a dynamic married couple who marked their first year at Rydal Park this past June. Jay – a lifelong exercise enthusiast – greets every morning with a 5 AM bike ride around Rydal Park’s 20-acre campus. “I can be gregarious. I can also be very independent. I make friends all right, but sometimes I just want to be alone. That’s the reason why I love biking. I get a lot thought out.” You’ll find Donna exercising in Rydal Park’s fitness center, where she participates in group classes with onsite fitness instructor and personal trainer Angie McNellis. She also does cardio, resistance training, and bodyweight exercises.

Keeping It Current
It’s never too late to learn something new, and at Rydal Park, we pride ourselves on being a bastion of continuing education. This learning ranges from the highly academic to the very practical, as evidenced by our recent Special Current Events Talk. This past May, resident Bill Lynott led a discussion on the topic of “10 Costly Banking Mistakes You Don’t Want to Make.”

Rydal Park On Display
At Rydal Park, our residents are explorers, frequent flyers and citizens of the world. They cherish their freedom, make the most of every minute and follow their curiosity far beyond the boundaries of their own backyard. For all such travelers, one of the great rewards of traversing the world is collecting and cataloguing mementos from each destination. Betty and Jerry Jackson especially know this to be true.

Boot Scootin’ Boogie

From the chic shops and restaurants of nearby Abington and Jenkintown to the surrounding serene nature trails, all just a 20-minute train trip from downtown Philadelphia, Rydal Park offers something for everyone. This spring, that list of on-campus activities got even longer with the addition of Line Dancing.

When the calendar turns to spring, many Rydal Park residents’ minds begin to wander outdoors and to thoughts of putting their green thumbs into action. For two of our residents – Carolyn Ramsey and Nancy Seitz – gardening has been a lifelong pursuit and they can’t wait to get their hands dirty again.

Soaring At Any Age
Sue Castle is a hard woman to get a hold of. If she isn’t volunteering at an area hospital, dining with her girlfriends at one of the many local restaurants or swimming a few laps in the fitness center, there’s a good possibility that she’s up in the air…literally. That’s because Sue, a 78-year-old resident of Rydal Park, is a former pilot who still enjoys the view from above…when her schedule permits, of course.
